Brisbane heat 47 for 1 time Melbourne Stars 46 for 6 (Jonassen 3-8) for nine wickets

Brisbane Heat secured a place in the WBBL final with a nine-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars in a rain-affected match.

The Heat bowlers defeated the Stars’ best hitters in a match reduced to seven overs per team at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. The Stars made just 46 for 6 after losing their opening four wickets in a span of three runs – Heat duo Lucy Hamilton and captain Jess Jonassen taking two wickets each in 10 balls.

Heat reached 47 for 1 from 5.2 overs: they cannot miss the final and still have a great chance of snatching first place from the leaders of the standings, Sydney Thunder. They joined the Melbourne Renegades on 12 points, one behind the Thunder.

The Renegades will play the Thunder on Saturday in their final game before the finals, while the Heat’s final game will be against the Sydney Sixers on Sunday.

After heavy rain delayed the start on Friday night, the bottom-placed Stars scored 21 for 0 in their opening two overs. But the Heat’s speedy 18-year-old Hamilton, who destroyed Stars five days ago by taking 5 of 8, again became his tormentor.

He claimed two wickets in three balls and then captain Jonassen picked up two more.

The Heat had no problems in their run chase: Grace Harris set the tone by hitting the first three balls of the innings for four. She, her sister and Laura Harris put on 34 for the first wicket as Heat cruised to victory.
