Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 bans mods in public online sessions due to ‘non-negligible’ server instability

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive has announced that it will ban mods from public online sessions, blaming them for a “not insignificant” amount of server instability seen by players, even those who do not have mods installed .

“We’ve seen incredible community engagement since launch and have noticed some players starting to create and share mods for Space Marine 2,” game director Dmitriy Grigorenko wrote in a community message shared on Steam. “The mods are great and will definitely contribute to the longevity of this game.”

“However, we as developers must also ensure the stability of the game and continually work towards a smoother experience for all players,” Grigorenko continued. “Our data shows that a non-negligible number of recent server stability issues are related to mods, and that instability affects even those users who do not have mods installed. We have also received reports from users that their save files became corrupted after play along with them. players with mods.”

As a result of the study’s findings, mods will be banned from all public online sessions once the next major Space Marine 2 update arrives in December. “You will no longer be able to access a public game if you have mods installed,” Grigorenko emphasized. However, that doesn’t mean the end of Space Marine 2 mods. Recognizing them as “a source of fun and creativity,” Grigorenko confirmed that players can still use online mods in the private Ops lobbies, and will also be allowed in Eternal War custom lobbies once released.

“We will also provide an easy entry point to our backend for games with mods installed,” Grigorenkoso added, “so that modders don’t have to waste time hacking the game executable after each patch.” Additionally, the studio intends to give modders access to some of its own tools at a later date, “so they can more easily develop mods.”

Space Marine 2’s December update also introduces the Dark Angel Chapter Pack, the illuminated enemy of Tzaangor, as well as a new PvE map set in Demerium, titled Obelisk. And if that’s still not enough Warhammer to fill your December, Games Workshop recently confirmed that Amazon’s upcoming Secret Level series will include an animated sequel to Space Marine 2.
