GOG has committed to preserving Warcraft 1 and 2 even though they will be removed from its store on December 13, 2024.
While it is not confirmed, it is likely that the games will be retired due to the recently released remasters.
However, as part of its game preservation efforts, GOG wrote in a blog post that once a game joins its archive program, the company “will commit to maintaining [a game‘s] Compatibility even if delisted [GOG] store”.
“At GOG we believe that games should live forever,” the team said. “This means not only preserving them but also ensuring that they remain accessible, up-to-date and enjoyable on modern systems.
“We are incredibly proud of the work we have done on Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2, bringing them back to life after decades of unavailability. Thanks to our efforts, we have introduced several new features to both titles, including multiplayer support over LAN. and improved graphics options such as antialiasing and anisotropic filtering.”
That’s why, as part of its preservation efforts, GOG says it’s committed to ensuring that “owners of those titles can still expect a seamless experience and technical support for those titles.”
“We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Blizzard on these titles. While the delisting is unfortunate, we assure you that all users who already own these games on GOG will continue to benefit from our commitment and will have access to versions that remain compatible with modern systems, preserving their expertise for years to come,” GOG concluded.
