The Detroit Lions have proposed a significant change for the planting of NFL playoffs that would largely use the regular season records as a governing principle, instead of division championships, according to a list of possible changes in the rules that the League launched on Wednesday.
According to the proposal, the winner of the Division with the best record of the conference would still receive the general seed number 1. But after that, the teams would be stacked by records, regardless of whether they won their divisions or received wild cards literas.
This approach could have a significant effect on the Lions and the NFC North Highly competitive, which presented three playoff teams last season: the Lions (15-2), the Minnesota Vikings (14-3) and the Green Bay Packers (11-6). The lions received the number 1 seed of the NFC, but the Vikings were sown No. 5, and the Packers were No. 7. Based on the records, the Vikings would have been the seed number 3, and the Packers would have been number 5.
The Los Angeles chargers made a similar proposal in 2023, but did not receive much support. Any NFL team can make a rule change proposal for consideration by owners. The proposals require that at least 24 votes be approved, but the owners are generally more likely to approve proposals that are backed by the Competition Committee instead of the individual teams.
The owners are scheduled to meet from March 30 to April 2 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Other club proposals for changes in rules, statutes and resolutions include:
