India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav will return to action for Mumbai’s upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) match against Andhra on Tuesday, December 3, after taking a two-week break to attend a family function . He is expected to play the rest of the tournament and also take part in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy starting December 21.
Suryakumar is not likely to lead Mumbai in SMAT with Shreyas Iyer in charge so far and is expected to continue in that position. It is understood that Suryakumar is fine with Iyer continuing as captain and is ready to bat in any position the team management deems fit for him.
Suryakumar, who recently led India to a convincing 3-1 series victory over South Africa, will join the Mumbai team in Hyderabad on Monday and is expected to be present for the next match. Mumbai, fourth in Group E, has won two of its three matches so far and has two league matches left after Sunday, when it will play Nagaland.
The ongoing SMAT has seen several high-profile names taking part after the T20I tour of South Africa, including Hardik Pandya, Shreyas, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Varun Chakravarthy and others. Suryakumar had also played a round of the Ranji Trophy in October before leaving for South Africa.
