Heyward has been associated with Hall of Fame defensive back Donnie Shell, who played in 201 games for Pittsburgh from 1974 to 1987. He recently dealt Hall of Fame cornerback Mel Blount, who played in 200 games from 1970 to 1983.
Only three alternate players have played in more games for the Steelers than Heyward, who is in the midst of his 14th season. Former teammates Ben Roethlisberger (249 games) and Hines Ward (217 games), as well as Hall of Fame center Mike Webster (220), have played in other games for the franchise.
Heyward ranks second in franchise history with 83.5 sacks taken. Earlier this year he handed out his former teammate and 2024 Steelers Hall of Honor member James Harrison.
Heyward, the 31st overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, is Pittsburgh’s longest-tenured player. He earned a multi-year extension this offseason that, however, ensured he will play games throughout his NFL tenure in Pittsburgh.
In addition to his constant games in the meadow, Heyward has been a pillar within the Pittsburgh crowd. His charitable work led to him being named last year’s Walter Payton NFL Player of the Time.
