Shake West Indies selected to throw towards Sri Lanka

The West Indies won the toss and put Sri Lanka into bat in the third and final ODI at Pallekele. Sri Lanka have built up an unassailable 2-0 lead in the order, but this would be the first time they will bat first on what is expected to be another spin-friendly pitch.

The return of opener Pathum Nissanka is one of two changes Sri Lanka have made, with seamer Dilshan Madushanka also back in the XI. Nishan Madushka and Dunith Wellalage are missing, so Sri Lanka will opt for two frontline seamers for the first pace of this order.

“I was very impressed,” captain Charith Asalanka said of Madushka at the toss. “He didn’t play as a debutant, he played like a mature player. I think he will do a lot of things for the country.”

Meanwhile, West Indies have made three changes with batsmen Evin Lewis and Jewel Andrew, and fast bowler Matthew Forde coming into the side. Seventeen-year-old Andrew will make his world debut, and Lewis is enjoying an ODI for first gear from July 2021. Alick Athanaze, Romario Shepherd and Hayden Walsh are close.

It’s a new pitch being used in the sport today, with slightly level square obstacles on all sides at 69 and 71 metres. Spin will be offered but on the slower side, although the ball may slide more directly towards the bat once the elements cool at night. There is a possibility of fog occurring throughout the game process.

Sri Lanka XI: Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis (wk) Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka (captain), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Janith Liyanage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Asitha Fernando

West Indies XI: Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope (captain, week), Keacy Carty, Jewel Andrew, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Gudakesh Motie, Jayden Seales, Alzarri Joseph, Matthew Forde
