A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter last Monday that Metcalf was considered weekly. Macdonald, in a video conference with reporters the next year, kept mentioning the possibility of Metcalf playing in the Seahawks’ Day 8 matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Seattle, calling his surprise “minor.”
“Chronology, I’m not sure,” Macdonald mentioned. “It doesn’t look like it’s a long-term injury and I know you guys know DK, we know DK, I imagine he’s probably going to do everything humanly possible to be able to play in this game. We’ll evaluate him as the week unfolds here.”
Metcalf, whose 568 receiving yards are second most in the NFL this season, suffered an injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Falcons while trying to make a catch on the sideline. The Fox broadcast then showed a replay of the receiver backing away uncomfortably as the Seahawks’ team doctor moved his right knee while analyzing it on the sideline.
Metcalf was announced as questionable to return and was taken to the storage room in the back of a crash cart midway through the fourth quarter, with an ice wrap over his right knee.
Before his upset, Metcalf had four passes for 99 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown even late in the first phase. He has three touchdowns on 35 receptions in seven games, plus two lost fumbles.
The Seahawks ended their three-game losing streak on Sunday despite missing several key players in their secondary and created their fourth chance in the right game.
Macdonald said the team hoped to have Riq Woolen (ankle) back as coach in some capacity on Wednesday, but that the status of fellow cornerback Tre Brown (ankle) was uncertain. Woolen, a Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2022, missed two games and Brown did not play against Atlanta.
The Seahawks’ status at the right time could also be uncertain.
Macdonald said on Monday he was unsure whether George Fant would return to continue this momentum, having said after the game it was a chance. Macdonald also said that Abe Lucas could be appointed to return to continue this momentum.
Lucas has not been able to physically make the list event recovering from knee surgery during the offseason. Signed to an independent agency to replace Lucas, Fant hurt his knee in the opener and was placed on injury hold on Day 3. Stone Forsythe started five games in Fant’s absence, but hurt his hand in the Day 6, which put pressure on the sixth rookie. The round chose Mike Jerrell in Sunday’s creation lineup.
Macdonald said Jerrell, Fant and Forsythe were likely in games to start against Buffalo and that Lucas was still several weeks away from being game ready.
“There is a situation where he could come back and start practicing this week, but we haven’t finalized that yet,” Macdonald said of Lucas. “But it looks good…with Abe. When he comes back, there’s a process to get him ready to play. So even if he could start practicing, I think we’re looking at a good amount of practice time.” to get him ready to go play a game.”
