Victory 232 (Harper 89, Manenti 5-73, Conway 4-39) and 9 for 0 need 337 more runs to win South Australia 307 and 270 for 8 (Manenti 62*, Lehmann 60, Siddle 4-63)

All-rounder Ben Manenti starred with bat and ball to leave South Australia in a good position heading into the final day of the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria in Adelaide.

The Victorian openers emerged unscathed from six overs, requiring a further 337 runs to win. South Australia were able to declare at the end of the day and gave Victoria a challenging 346-run victory target thanks to some typically strong knocks from Manenti.

Three huge sixes highlighted Manenti’s 62 not out off 71 balls. Arriving at the crease with the home team trailing 3 fpr 4 and looking wobbly at 176 for 6, Manenti top-scored for his team and also completed career-best bowling figures of 5 for 73 earlier in the day.

Victoria resumed on the third day at 195 for 7, with Manenti taking four first-order wickets. But it was Harry Conway who claimed the biggest sacking during the morning session when he sacked Sam Harper.

The wicketkeeper revived Victoria’s innings on the second day and, after resuming it with 68, reached 89 when Conway caught lbw. He earlier bowled Peter Siddle and Manenti finished the innings by bowling Doug Warren to leave Victoria with a 75-run deficit in the first innings.

South Australia’s turn in the box began with Henry Hunt trapped behind scoreless for a second successive second innings for the otherwise high-scoring opener.

By contrast, Jake Lehmann posted a well-compiled 60 after being dismissed for a duck in the first innings. There have also been spells for in-form Alex Carey, with the Test glove now boasting a Shield average of 88 three games into the season.

Veteran pacer Siddle topped the Victorian bowlers for the second time in the match with 4 for 63, while rookie Warren returned 3 for 74.
