South Australia 110 and 53 for 3 trails New South Wales 394 (Patterson 71, Maddinson 69, Davies 56, Gilkes 55, McAndrew 4-90) by 231 runs

Kurtis Patterson has taken the next step in his resurgence as a first-class cricketer, hitting another half-century as New South Wales pressed their lead over South Australia.

Dropped from NSW’s Sheffield Shield team for most of last summer and fearing his career could be over, Patterson hit three half-centuries in a row for the Blues on Friday. With NSW on top, Patterson scored 71 to help NSW to 394 at the end of the second day and a first innings lead of 284 at Karen Rolton Oval.

South Australia fell behind at 53 for 3, and still needed 231 more runs for NSW to bat again. Paceman Jackson Bird was 2 for 15 to follow his heroic first innings of 7 for 46.

Patterson took his time during most of his innings, smashing two boundaries through covers and another at mid-wicket. The two-time Test representative eventually lost his leg stump trying to watch Brendan Doggett, but Patterson has now clearly given himself a second life as a first-class cricketer.

He has posted scores of 91, 66 and 71 since his return earlier this month, after only being withdrawn when New South Wales ran out of batsmen during Australia A duties.

Patterson was one of four New South Wales players to surpass 50 against the previously unbeaten South Australians. After Nic Maddinson hit 69 on the opening night, Oliver Davies worked his way to 56 on the second day regularly facing off-spinner Lloyd Pope.

With a floppy hat, Davies used his feet to hit Pope for four through cover, down the ground for a big six and then over cover for four again in quick succession.

Matthew Gilkes also scored 55, while Nathan McAndrew scored 4 for 90 for South Australia and Doggett 3 for 90. However, no South Australian could replicate the joy of NSW veteran Bird on day one, who established the dominance of the Blues.
