RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks’ headquarters lost power as a result of high winds from a storm that hit western Washington on Tuesday.
The Virginia Mason Athletic Center was using limited backup power Wednesday after a “bomb cyclone” caused a massive blackout that affected hundreds of thousands of people in the western part of the state.
The Seahawks adjusted their Wednesday schedule and held positional meetings in the same room. Several players used the lights on their cell phones to supplement the dim lighting of the locker room while it was open to reporters.
Coach Mike Macdonald began his press conference with well wishes for those affected and a thank you to the workers who are helping with the situation.
“We delayed some things,” Macdonald said of how the disruption has affected the Seahawks’ preparations for their Sunday game against the Arizona Cardinals at Lumen Field. “There are some things we don’t have in the building, but we’re good.”
The team took its morning run and, when the wind died down, practiced outdoors.
“I just want to first thank everyone who was affected by what happened today weather-wise,” catcher DK Metcalf said as he began his news conference. “I hope everyone is okay and everyone turns their lights on very quickly and quickly.”
Metcalf was asked how the situation has impacted the Seahawks’ preparation.
“It all depends on how you look at it,” he said. “I don’t think it impacted us that much. We still have to get in. We still have to get set up. The Cardinals aren’t making any excuses, so we can’t make an excuse for ourselves. We still have our set up in and we were still able to walk through it and now get out to practice.”
