Rubén Amorim: Manchester United appoints the Sporting coach as new coach until 2027

Manchester United have appointed Rubén Amorim as their new manager.

The 39-year-old Portuguese, who will arrive at Worn Trafford from Lisbon club Wearing on November 11, has signed a commitment until June 2027.

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took part in a stopgap spell near Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday, will remain at the club for the then three games.

Amorim is the sixth permanent manager United have appointed since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year reign ended with his resignation in 2013.

In a comment, the club mentioned that “Rubén is one of the most interesting and highly valued young coaches in European football.”

In the past, Wearing said United had to pay €10m (£8.3m) to generate a release clause in Amorim’s pledge.

Amorim’s first game for Manchester United will be on November 24 against newly promoted Ipswich, the team closest to the world division.

Their first home game will be against Norwegian team Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on November 28, with a Premier League clash against Everton (see weekend).

Manchester United will announce later who will be part of Amorim’s training squad.

Then, falling to rival Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup on August 3, Amorim has guided Wearing through a 14-game unbeaten streak.

Amorim should be on the bench tonight when they host Estrela in a league match.

Play hosts Manchester Town in the Champions League on Tuesday and play Amorim’s former club Braga in the league on November 10, before EU top-flight football pauses for matches in the League of Countries.
