Palm Beach, Fla. – The NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, said Tuesday that the idea that NFL players compete in flag soccer at the Los Angeles Games in Los Angeles of 2028 have been a popular theme among the players of the league and suggested that it would probably happen.
“I have heard directly from many players who want to participate and represent their country, whether the United States or the country they came from,” said Goodell while ending the annual NFL meeting.
Participation in the Olympic Games was one of the topics of conversation with the owners and officials of the League this week, several people told ESPN, while the NFL tries to solve the problems associated with the players who participate in the games.
The male and female flag football will debut as an Olympic sport in 2028 and its addition to the Games occurs, in part, due to the full support of the NFL. Flag Football is a key initiative for NFL because the league sees it as a way of cultivating American football at international level.
But there are problems that must be addressed, including the protections of injuries for teams and players, and the Olympic Games schedule, which could conflict with the start of the NFL training fields at the end of the summer. The games are scheduled for July 14 to 30, 2028.
“I think that is something we will continue to discuss, not only the union, but also the clubs,” said Goodell. “I think both are things that we will probably solve at some point in the next 60 days.”
In other places, Goodell continued to defend the position of the League about diversity in the light of generalized rejection throughout the country against efforts of diversity, equity and inclusion.
“We are totally committed to continuing that job to try to develop a better talent and give them that opportunity and improve the NFL,” said Goodell. “Then, we are all in that.”
When asked about the current league panorama that does not include black offensive coordinators, Goodell said: “We have many excellent offensive minds in the League: black, white and young women too, who are entering this. So, there are only many opportunities. So, that is always a challenge … but I think I have been very clear that we believe that diversity makes us better.”
He previously asked about his position on Rooney’s rule, which requires that the teams interview the underrepresented candidates for several roles, including the chief coach and the general manager, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, offered his support.
“I am in favor of Rooney’s rule,” he said.
Meanwhile, Goodell said the League was not closer to deciding the fate of the Baltimore Ravens, Justin Tucker, who has been accused of inappropriate behavior by 16 eight spas massage therapists and Baltimore Welfare centers, according to Baltimore’s banner.
The NFL review is ongoing, said Goodell, added that the League will not offer updates.
