Muhammad Waseem has stepped down as UAE Men’s ODI captain and will next make 26 appearances between 2023 and 2024. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rahul Chopra has been named intact captain and will lead the UAE in the next round of World Cup League 2 of ICC Cricket (CWC) matches in Oman against the hosts and Netherlands in early November.

“I have decided to step down as captain to concentrate on my batting in the ODI format,” said Waseem, who remains a part of the ODI team. “My best wishes go to the new captain, I will give him all my support.”

Chopra, the intact captain, has played just seven ODIs to go with six T20Is.

Waseem, the 30-year-old top-order batsman, took over the ODI captaincy of CP Rizwan during the 2019-23 CWC League 2 for the UAE’s match against Nepal in March 2023. Under him, the UAE won only seven ODIs and lost 19, with Waseem the team’s standout player in the matches they won: he averaged 64.28 in those seven games, reaching his lowest century in the format, 119 against Papua New Guinea, and three half-centuries in the some video games.

In the 19 they lost, Waseem’s average was 21.10, closer to his career choice of 25.44.

The United Arab Emirates are recently playing the 2024-27 edition of the CWC League 2, where they lost their last match, Waseem’s last match as captain, to Namibia by eight wickets and then bowed out for 190. The United Arab Emirates They are the base of the table of eight teams. At that time he was playing seven matches, of which he had only won one, which possibly would have contributed to Waseem deciding to go out sick.
Waseem also remains a regular member of the UAE T20I team and played his part in the team winning the tri-series in Namibia last generation, where the USA was the third team. Waseem top-scored in the match with 159 runs in four innings as the UAE won three games and lost one to finish on high.
