Critical Role will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year and it looks like the next big step for the real gaming podcast is video games.
It wasn’t really a surprise that something like Critical Role, a Dungeons & Dragons podcast with some beloved voice actors, took off the way it did. People love DnD and who better to participate in a game than a group of voice actors? In the years since then there have been all kinds of expansions into the world, all kinds of tie-ins, and in 2022 it even had an animated adaptation. But what’s next? Well, according to a recent profile of the cast in Rolling Stone, video games, apparently! Laura Bailey, who you may have also heard in games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Nier, and the Uncharted series, shared in the profile that the team has been “talking about making a video game since we started playing together.”

His co-star Travis Willingham, best known for roles in shows like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Sonic the Hedgehog, also noted that “I would say it’s an active pursuit on our part. And hopefully, we’ll have something really exciting to share.” maybe towards the end of the year, maybe early 2025, just in time for our 10th anniversary, but it’s something we definitely had in mind.
“Those collaborations that we’ve had with various partners have been little dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of turmoil in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios like bear and overcome those tensions. It’s trying to be smarter about it and figure out how we could fit into that larger ecosystem.”
There’s not much left of the year, but as Willingham said, it could be early 2025, and considering the show’s anniversary is in March, they have plenty of time. Whatever type of game comes to fruition, I’m sure it will end up being as popular as the rest.
