Overwatch 2’s Epic Kiriko Play Demonstrates the Game’s Big Play Issue

An Overwatch 2 player shares an impressive moment from their most recent game to highlight flaws in the Play of the Game system.

An Overwatch 2 player posted a video from their most recent match in which they wiped out the entire opposing team as Kiriko but did not receive the Play of the Game, which is supposed to highlight a game-changing action. Many players want to be featured in the Play of the Game at the end of an Overwatch 2 match, but some can’t get it no matter how much of an impact they had on their games.

One of the most rewarding aspects of Overwatch 2 is the game play. An algorithm is supposed to determine which play was the most impactful at the end of each game and display it for all players to see. The game begins with a Highlight Intro of the chosen character and presents a game-changing moment from the player’s point of view. While this Overwatch 2 Play of the Game frequently highlights multiple kills or the impactful use of an Ultimate ability, it can also highlight an environmental kill or important assists in critical moments such as Overtime.

AQuarterChub, a Reddit user, shared a clip from one of their Overwatch 2 matches in which they played as Kiriko and killed the entire enemy team during Overtime, allowing their team to win the game. Despite Kiriko’s initial role as a healer, aQuarterChub had a greater impact on their game by throwing kunai at their enemies and killing them all one by one. However, when the Play of the Game appeared, they were surprised to see that their game-changing action was not the match’s highlight. Click here to watch the entire video.

Other Overwatch 2 players were not as surprised that Kiriko’s action was not chosen as the Play of the Game in the comments section of this Reddit post. They noticed that even if Kiriko wiped out the entire enemy team, the kills were too dispersed to be featured in the Gameplay. Kiriko killed her enemies one by one over the course of 30 seconds, whereas Play of the Game clips typically last less than 20 seconds. As a result, Overwatch 2 would choose another game-changing moment in which kills are closer, such as a multi-kill action caused by an Ultimate ability.

Overwatch 2 Plays of the Game highlight not only the best action from a match, but they are also a nice way to recognize players who performed well. However, these clips are sometimes funnier than they should be, especially when things don’t go as planned, such as when Pharah blows herself up after a quadruple kill in Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 is out now in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
