Nintendo is seeking the ability to subpoena business records from various domains, including Reddit, in an effort to crack down on Switch piracy, with one target being a very popular Switch piracy subreddit.
Earlier this year, Nintendo sued James Williams, who Nintendo said was the “operator, supervisor, and driving force behind several pirate stores, through which the defendant has offered massive libraries of pirated Nintendo Switch games.” .
Williams was also one of the moderators of the popular subreddit r/SwitchPiracy and now, according to GameFile, Nintendo is seeking trading records from several platforms, including Reddit, to track down other users.
“Reddit, Inc. operates a social media platform where users, often using pseudonyms, can post to different forums known as communities or ‘subreddits,'” Nintendo says in a document.
“The defendant was the lead moderator of the SwitchPirates community, under the name ‘Archbox’, which had more than 190,000 members. “Nintendo has reason to believe that other active accounts in the SwitchPirates community may also have been controlled by the defendant, or reflect other individuals who have worked alongside the defendant.”
The filing goes on to say that “the purpose of all requested subpoenas is to seek relevant information necessary for NOA to pursue infringement claims.”
