Nintendo’s live action film, The Legend of Zelda, could be part of a planned trilogy, since production prepares for filming at the end of this year.
According to the production list, as a monitoring service led by the film and television industry alliance, Zelda will film in New Zealand from November 2025 to April 2026. Nintendo announced on Friday that the Zelda film will be released in March 2027.
The site also offers a movie synopsis. Zelda will follow Link, “a young warrior destined to protect Hyrule’s magical kingdom from the forces of darkness.”
“The earth is threatened from Ganon, a lord of the ruthless war looking for the Triforce, an ancient relic that is said to give unlimited power,” continues the synopsis. “To stop it, Link must embark on a dangerous trip, fight against monstrous creatures, explore treacherous dungeons and solve intricate puzzles to discover sacred artifacts that can help you in your search.”
In addition, the informant of the film industry Daniel Richtman has affirmed that Nintendo and Sony Pictures are planning a possible trilogy of films for Zelda. According to Richtman, all important acting roles will be signed for three planned films for six years.
Zelda’s legend is Nintendo’s third franchise to receive cinematographic treatment in recent years. Detective Pikachu and Super Mario Bros movie launched for great success, with the Super Mario Bros movie becoming one of the highest grossing animated films in history.
Zelda’s film will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, representative director and member of Nintendo, and the veteran Hollywood producer Avi Arad, the former creative director of Marvel Entertainment.
It will be produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions, and led by Wes Ball, the director behind the Maze Runner trilogy and the kingdom of the planet of the Apes.
In an interview earlier this year, Ball said he wanted to make Zelda’s movie “something serious, but fun and capricious.”
