Nintendo delays Switch 2 pre-orders in the US due to Trump tariffs

Nintendo has said that Nintendo Switch will not begin in advance in the US in the US.

The early orders of the new Nintendo console dedicated themselves to Europe and the United Kingdom this week, after the direct Nintendo presentation of the firm. Now, Nintendo has said that it will not open in advance orders to customers in the United States due to the turbulent financial situation in the country.

“The early orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not begin on April 9, 2025 to evaluate the potential impact of rates and the evolutionary conditions of the market,” Nintendo said in a statement to Gamespot.

“Nintendo will update time at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 does not change.”

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has been imposing tariffs on numerous countries in recent weeks, including a considerable rate about China, where technological products are often manufactured.

On Wednesday, it also introduced a 10% general rate in all imports, with countries like China and Japan, what Trump calls “the worst criminals”, obtaining larger tariffs of 54% and 24%, respectively.

A report by The Financial Times last month suggested that Nintendo had already been changing China’s production since Trump’s first administration declared that his intention to fly global trade, noting that more than half of the hardware that Nintendo imports to the United States comes from Vietnam and Cambodia.

However, Trump rates imposed on Wednesday, which according to him, will enter into force on April 9, include a 46% tariff over Vietnam and a 49% tariff on Cambodia.

According to FT sources, hundreds of thousands of Switch 2 consoles have already been sent from Vietnam to Nintendo American facilities since the beginning of the year, perhaps in advance of such movement.

The Independent Nintendo Switch 2 console will cost $ 449.99 / € 469.99 / £ 395.99. The package version, which includes a digital version of Mario Kart World, will cost $ 499.99 / € 509.99 / £ 429.99.

In Japan, the situation is something different. There, players can buy the Switch 2 of retail stores for 49,980 ($ 334), but this version will be blocked in Japan.

This ‘Only Domestic’ console will only have Japanese as a console language option, and the only Nintendo account that can be linked to it will be created with the country/region environment established in Japan.

Japanese players who want the multilingual edition and without Switch 2 region can only buy it at the Japanese My Nintendo store at a price of 69,980 yen ($ 467).
