Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe described talks with Alexander Isak as a “complex situation”.

Newcastle signed Isak, 25, from Real Sociedad in August 2022 for a club fee of £63m.

The Swedish striker has scored 36 goals in 74 games for the club, but has scored just once this season.

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League move to Chelsea on Sunday, Howe was once asked about Isak’s generation at St James’ Ground.

“That’s a little more complex situation,” Howe said.

“As for contracts, I am not involved in those day-to-day discussions. Alex has a long contract at the football club and we have to be very careful with our expenses due to the profitability and sustainability (PSR) rules. No “It’s a clear situation.”

Newcastle finalized the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson before the PSR deadline on June 30 to avoid breaking the rules.

Howe insisted: “Of course we love him. [Isak] And we are desperate for him to stay at Newcastle for many years and score many goals for us. “I don’t see any short-term problems in his contract.”

Isak is under contract until 2028 but has reportedly attracted interest from clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea., abroad

Howe’s comments come three days after Anthony Gordon signed a new long-term deal with the club.

The Newcastle boss described the transfer as “a really smart job by the football club and by Anthony”.

Isak returned from a toe injury in Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, however Howe showed that his teammate Callum Wilson is not, but a match.

“We are going to lose Callum [Wilson] for the next three games. “He just had some tension and felt like he couldn’t continue until the last part,” Howe said.

“He doesn’t have any injuries as such, he’s just not ready to return yet.”
