Netflix Games’ first boss has reportedly left the company, months after switching roles to focus on AI

According to the reports, the Netflix executive who had the task of creating the company’s games division has left the company.

The former Electronic Arts and Facebook executive, Mike Verdu, joined Netflix in August 2021, and had the task of leading the expansion of the transmission service in the video game market.

Veru resigned his role last year, and assumed the new role of ‘VP, Genai for Games’, which described how to “boost a turning point of” once in a generation “for the development of games and the experiences of the players using generative ia”.

However, according to the journalist Stephen Totilo through his game archive bulletin, Veru has now completely left Netflix. According to the reports, the news was confirmed to Totilo by a Netflix representative.

When Verdu left his leadership role last year, he was replaced by Alain Tascan, former executive vice president of games development in Epic Games.

Since the arrival of Tascan, Netflix has begun to make generalized changes in its video game arm, including the closure of numerous aspects of it in an attempt to reorganize the interactive side of its business.

In October, Netflix closed its Triple-A study, known as Team Blue, after spending the last years acquiring several veteran developers to join him. These included former Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny, Halo veteran Joseph Staten and former Sony Santa Mónica Raf Grassetti art director. According to the reports, the three left Netflix after the study closed.

The following month, he eliminated almost all his interactive specials, which developed as branched stories with players that make decisions to progress history in several directions. 20 of its 24 interactive specials were eliminated before December 1.

Last month it was reported that Netflix had also fired multiple employees in Night School Studio, the best known development team for Oxenfree games. Night School Studio was acquired by Netflix in 2021, becoming the first game developer acquired by the transmission company.

Despite these actions, Netflix still seems to be committed to including games as part of its service. In December 2024 he launched the mobile title squid game: Unleashed, and recently announced plans to bring the WWE 2K series to Mobile as exclusive from Netflix.
