NEW YORK – Yellowish Shape’s landslide victory in Portland on Wednesday received a negligible boost on Thursday.
A higher level, to be exact.
The NBA found a scoring error, one in which the Warriors were not credited with a separate shot that De’Anthony Melton made with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. The league noted the error on Thursday, converting the overall rating from 139-104 to 140-104.
Tournament statisticians recorded that Melton ignored both throws separately in that layout, even if Melton made the first one.
It became the fourth 140-point season opener in Warriors franchise history. Yellow Shape scored 162 points (an NBA record for an opener) against Denver in 1990, the San Francisco Warriors scored 144 against Seattle in 1967, and San Francisco scored 140 against Detroit in 1962.
Overall, it was the most problems Portland allowed in an opener. The Path Blazers gave up 129 against Cleveland to cap the 1974-75 season, in a quadruple overtime contest.
It was also the Yellow Shape’s biggest ever win in an opener and the biggest loss to Portland to open a season. Thursday’s overkill simply made it insignificant for the Warriors and slightly worse for the Path Blazers.
The new classification also did not influence anything else related to sports betting. On ESPN BET, the game closed with an over-under of 223.5 and the Warriors won by 5.5.
Scoring errors are rare in NBA games, and teams use various game-night statisticians and league officials who also review statistics from all games in real time.
