Michael Gallup is back in the NFL. Washington commanders announced Thursday that they have signed Gallup with a contract.
Gallup is trying a return after retiring from the last low season from the NFL. He spent the first six years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys before being released in March 2024. He signed with the Raiders of Las Vegas in April, but decided at the beginning of the training field to retire instead of playing during the 2024 season. The Raiders released him from the reserve/withdrawal list before this season, freeing him to sign with Washington.
The move to Washington brings together Gallup with several former companions and coaches of Dallas, as coach of the commanders, Dan Quinn, was the defensive coordinator of the cowboys during the last three years of Gallup with the team. Other ancient jeans such as the Tyler Biecesz center and the Dorance Armstrong defensive wing followed Quinn to Washington, and now Gallup has done the same.
A third round selection in 2018, Gallup spent most of his career operating as option No. 2 or 3 for Dak Prescott in Dallas. His best season came in 2019, when he caught 66 passes for 1,107 yards and 6 touchdowns. An ACL torn in 2021 derailed his career, since he was never the same player after returning from that injury.

Although the cowboys signed it with a new contract despite the knee problem, Gallup was ineffective in its role. In both seasons after ACL breakage, Gallup caught only 73 of 131 goals in 31 games, totaling 842 yards and 6 scores. Its average of 27.2 yards per game during that period was just over half of the brand that had its own during its first four seasons of the NFL (52.8 per game). As a result, Dallas cut the ties with him the low season in a salary compensation movement.
At its peak, Gallup was a high level threat and a disputed capture specialist. If he is healthy, maybe he could play a part -time role in a similar line for a Washington team that already has Terry McLaurin and Debo Samuel locked up as his two best reception options.
