Mario Kart 9 fan speculation points to fuel tank gameplay

Mario Kart fans are excited about yesterday’s reveal of a new entry in Nintendo’s racing series for Switch 2, and have found a few more clues about how the game might play.

Our first look at Mario Kart 9, or whatever it’s called, was, on the surface, a pretty straightforward affair. We saw a race track, 12 returning characters and not much else.

Except for the fact that, as we noted yesterday, there are now 24 spots on the track’s starting grid. Hey! Let’s hope Nintendo has improved their online servers to allow 24 players.

Overnight, fans analyzed the trailer in more detail, with a view to working out what the main ‘trick’ of Mario Kart 9 could be. We’ve had underwater racing and gliders, anti-gravity tracks and now… could the big change of Mario Kart 9 revolve around fuel conservation?

One fan spotted a rather flashy fuel tank added to the side of Mario’s family kart, labeled “1-UP Fuel.” The same fan also pointed out the mysterious glowing ignition apparently placed outside a burger joint at a pit stop, perhaps a refueling ignition.

Another fan pointed out the presence of a large gas station next to the track itself, with a large sign that said: “Gasolinera Flor de Fuego.”

Other changes noted yesterday include slight adjustments to the character designs of Mario and Donkey Kong. (We think they now look more deliberately like the ones seen in the Super Mario Bros. movie!)

For lots more talk about Mario Kart 9, including our theories on whether the game could be open-world or feature user-created courses, be sure to check out the latest episode of the Eurogamer Newscast, below.
