Liverpool in the Premier League: Diego Jota Gout – Was he offside?

The former winner of the Premier League, Chris Sutton, said the law was well known among the players.

“It really is intelligent of Luis Díaz, because he knows he is on the side once Tarkowski has played the ball,” he told BBC Sport.

“I do not think that changing the law is a good idea. It is more complicated than only this scenario, because without having this subjective element, you would return to where everything is out of play.

“If you are Everton, you feel a little hard, I understand it. But everything can’t be black and white unless you want to return to the days when someone was out of play, then that was the call.”

Speaking in BBC Radio 5 Live, the former left side of Liverpool, Stephen Warnock, had a different point of view.

“This is a problem within the rules book and from here is where it comes from,” he said.

“Because they look through the list of things and go: ‘Was he interfering with the game? No.’

“Well, it’s really if you’ve played the game and you understand the game.

“If you are at a couple of yards behind me and I am defending the edge of the box, my body is always half, thinking: ‘Where are you and what are you doing?’

“Are you coming and pinching in front of me? Are you going to make a movement and try to put yourself on the side? So I’m always reacting to you. My body is always feeling you and my eyes line is always drawn towards you and the ball, so I constantly put on my rotating head, so you are affecting me.

“And if you entered and talked to all ex -professionals within the training centers or wherever they are and said ‘Are you active in this position?’ Everyone would say ‘He is affecting me, 100%’.

“But there is a type of tigas list within the offside rules, and that is a problem. You have to use common sense sometimes and you have to understand the game.”
