Only three teams have won the title after being 11 points or more behind the leaders: Arsenal in 1997-98 and Manchester United in 1992-93 and 1995-96.
“I don’t think there’s any way back for Manchester City now,” former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher said after the match at Anfield.
However, City manager Pep Guardiola did not concede the title.
“Before this game I said that we were not in a position to think about objectives, but the season is long,” he said.
“We have to think about achieving results and then some players will come back and then we will be better and we will believe that maybe. There are many things to fight for and we are going to try.”
City are famous for their great finishing ability and have only lost four combined Premier League games after Christmas in the last three seasons.
If they were to win their final 25 games, they would finish with 98 points, while Liverpool’s form, carried over for the rest of the campaign, would see them finish with 99.
Carragher said: “Right now I could see Manchester City lose another four or five games between now and the end of the season.
“I think it’s almost a mini crisis at Manchester City. I think it’s reminiscent of Liverpool two years ago and I think City could have a fight on their hands for the top four.”
City have not failed to reach the Champions League since 2010-11 and former defender Micah Richards described the current situation as “bleak”.
“I’m not going to completely rule out City because football can be like that, but I don’t see them being able to catch up to Liverpool,” he admitted.
