Jamaica Scorpions captain John Campbell received a four-match suspension for failing to show up for the draw against Barbados Pride, resulting in the forfeit of the Super50 final for 2024-25. Campbell said he was “sincerely sorry” about the incident in a statement issued by cricket West Indies (CWI).

“I sincerely regret any disruption caused during the final and recognize that my actions may have been perceived as resistance to the referees’ decision,” Campbell said. “It was never my intention to undermine your authority or discredit the game. I fully recognize the importance of maintaining the integrity of the game and the need to respect the rules and decisions of the referees.”

The Super50 final was lost in extraordinary circumstances, when none of the captains showed up for the draw in a rain-soaked contest. The umpires had deemed the conditions suitable for a match of 20 overs per side. But without any of the captains making an appearance, no trophy was awarded for the 2024-25 edition.

The disciplinary committee is yet to decide the fate of Barbados captain Raymon Reifer, who faces similar charges, as he is yet to respond to the charges, leveled by match referee Reon King.

“We appreciate Mr. Campbell’s acknowledgment of the situation and his sincere apology. In light of his admission and demonstrated remorse, the CWI has applied the minimum sanction of a four-game suspension for a Level 3 infraction, such as a question of leniency,” said the CWI director. of cricket said Miles Bascombe.

“This decision reinforces the fundamental role of captains in upholding the values of sportsmanship and respect for the integrity of the game,” he said. “We are confident that John will use this experience to continue to contribute positively to West Indies cricket and serve as a role model in the future.”

The board confirmed that no fees would be distributed for the final matches and no cash prizes would be awarded to the winners and runners-up of the tournament.
