Ind vs NZ: Amelia Kerr injured out of rest of ODI series in India and most of WBBL

New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr has been ruled out of the remainder of two ODIs against Bharat after she tore her left quadriceps muscle. Kerr suffered the trauma during Thursday’s opening match, which Bharat won by 59 runs, and is expected to take approximately three weeks to recover. It cannot be changed within the ODI team.

This also puts their participation in the WBBL in serious uncertainty for the Sydney Sixers with the tournament set to begin on Sunday. Amelia was once a previous big-name signing for the Sixers as a platinum pick and can sit out 8 of the Sixers’ 10 league games despite recovering in 3 weeks.

An NZC release said Amelia was taken for scans on Friday morning, which revealed a grade one quadriceps tear, and would return home on Sunday to begin her rehabilitation.

“We are really gutted for Melie,” said Brandnew Zealand chief educator Ben Sawyer. “Injuries are always a difficult time for a player and we know how disappointed she is not to be able to play in these games.

“We know how integral Melie is to this team, so we will certainly sideline her, but we wish her a speedy healing.”

Shortly after playing a pivotal role in New Zealand’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 15 scalps, Amelia was also New Zealand’s top bowler in the opening ODI, taking 4 for 42 before scoring an unbeaten 25 from 23 in the chase. The remaining two ODIs will be held on October 27 and 29, also in Ahmedabad.

Amelia’s absence could hurt Brandnew Zealand’s hopes of climbing the Women’s ODI Championship table, where a top-six finish will ensure direct qualification for the ODI World Cup in 2025. Brandnew Zealand currently sit in sixth place out of 10 groups and will be able to play the next matches. Australia in December.
