Ind vs NZ 3rd Test: Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested for Mumbai Test

0
Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the third and final Test of the series against New Zealand in Mumbai. Bumrah was with the team when they started training at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, but all he did was light physical work and some fielding drills. He did not bowl during any of the training sessions India had at the stadium.

It is understood that Bumrah does not have any injury and it is not yet known if the team management wanted to rest him or if Bumrah himself wanted to rest.

The news that Bumrah might miss the game came to light soon after head coach Gautam Gambhir mentioned that all players were available for selection and dismissed concerns of Bumrah not bowling in training.

“I think he [Bumrah] “He has just finished his preparations,” Gambhir said Thursday. “I think we know what the weather is like in Mumbai, so obviously he needs to conserve his energy as well. So he’s already bowled, he’s very well prepared and he’s fine. That’s why he’s a senior player, he knows how much he needs to prepare for the Test Match”.

Bumrah has played all four Tests of the home season so far, bowling the third-most overs (90) and taking the third-most wickets (14). He was recently handed the vice-captaincy of the team and is on track to lead them into the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in November, when Rohit Sharma is expected to miss the first Test due to personal reasons. Given his other role as the team’s leading bowler, India will want Bumrah to be fit and in form for each of the five Tests of that tour, which begins on November 18 and runs through January 7.
There was no indication from the team management, in the two days they attended training at the Wankhede, that Bumrah would miss the match. Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar even highlighted how India’s recent Tests haven’t really come to an end and that Bumrah’s workload had not reached levels where they would be worried about him.

“In the two Test matches he has bowled [against New Zealand] around 20-25 overs. So he hasn’t played much,” Nayar said Wednesday. “Yes, there will always be a reflection process on his workload. We also played two games where we haven’t had cricket in five days, that’s more like three, three and a half. Then you have enough rest. But Booms is very important to us and his workload will always be on our minds.”

The fast bowlers are unlikely to get much help from the Mumbai pitch that has been prepared. The red ground should ensure there is good bounce and the morning humidity combined with the new ball might give them a small window to do a bit of damage, but it is largely the spinners that both teams will turn to. India have already gone down 2-0, their first home series defeat in 12 years, making the Test something of a stalemate, although there are WTC points up for grabs. India are at the top of the WTC table and fighting for a place in the final at Lord’s in June 2025.
