Former New Zealand international Larsen to leave Warwickshire role

Gavin Larsen will step down as Warwickshire’s performance director after 18 months in the role, the club has announced.

Larsen moved to the UK from New Zealand in early 2023, taking up a new role after the departure of Paul Farbrace as sporting director. Larsen had previously spent eight years as New Zealand coach.

The former Black Caps sailor will return to his home country for personal reasons, although he will continue in the role until the new year to help with the transition, while Warwickshire will review its leadership structure, according to chief executive Stuart Cain.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to be a part of the Bears family and I have enjoyed every second,” Larsen said. “My tenure has been shorter than planned. But sometimes in life you can throw a curveball. That’s the case here.

“It has been a great journey and I certainly feel a big part of the Edgbaston family. People and relationships are always key in any walk of life. And here at Edgbaston I can honestly say that it is such a positive environment that I have been involved.

“I wish everyone at Edgbaston the best and will always follow the club’s progress with enormous interest.”

Warwickshire finished fourth and seventh in County Championship Division One during Larsen’s two seasons in charge, as well as losing consecutive home quarter-finals in the T20 Blast.

Cain said: “Gavin has great energy and a deep knowledge of cricket second to none. He has worked tirelessly to improve the high performance environment in Warwickshire and will be welcome back to Edgbaston any time. As they say, once a bear, always a bear.

“Although we are not linked, we will now combine the findings of the high performance review with the opportunity to renew our high performance leadership team and ensure we give our men’s and women’s teams every chance to succeed on the field in 2025 and beyond.”
