ESA launches Accessible Games Initiative to improve visibility of accessibility features


The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced the formation of the accessible games initiative.

Developed by Electronic Arts, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo of America, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Ubisoft, the accessible games initiative aims to provide clear information about the accessibility characteristics in the games.

Companies that include Amazon games, Riot Games, Square Enix and Warner Bros. Games have joined the project.

The initiative has been launched with 24 labels that can be used by developers, which cover accessibility characteristics, including narrated menus, entry reallocation, stick investment, subtitles formats and color alternatives. The complete list of labels can be found on the website of the accessible games initiative.

These labels were “developed with information and feedback directly from players with disabilities, accessibility defense groups and game development equipment,” said ESA.

The implementation of these labels is voluntary and will be exhibited in digital windows, pages of products or digital catalogs.

“Dozens of millions of Americans have disabilities, they often face barriers to experience the joy and connection involved in playing video games,” said the president and CEO of ESA, Stanley Pierre-Louis.

“We are immediately proud to announce the accessible games initiative in association with industry leaders. This initiative demonstrates how shocking we can be when we work together in our search for the entire industry to help more people experience the power of the game.”
