Developer Claims Stopped Halo Countless Actual Combat ‘Could Have Been Game-Changing’

Positive Affinity was working on what would have been a “game-changing” live combat version for Halo Countless, according to the studio’s former design director Mike Clopper.

The prolific Austin, Texas-based backend studio has collaborated on installments in the Halo and Name of Accountability franchises since 2007, as well as shooters Left 4 Dead and Doom.

He worked with the Xbox studio formerly called 343 Industries on Halo Miles for several years, during which he was reported but never shown to be developing a version of Battle Royale.

But Clopper, who in the past joined Name of Accountability’s Raven Device studio as design director, has now discussed Halo’s unannounced live combat format on his LinkedIn profile.

“I led a large team of designers working on a canceled Battle Royale mode for Halo,” he wrote. “I think this product could have been a game-changer for the franchise. We loved playing it and working on it, it was a fantastic experience despite its cancellation.”

Microsoft recently rebranded 343 Industries as ‘Halo Studios’ and showed that it is running some games developed with Unreal Engine 5.

The scoop was announced during the Halo Global Championship event this past and was accompanied through a video showing a technical test of different Halo-themed areas running in UE5.
