Citizen Sleeper 2 will be the last Citizen Sleeper video game

Citizen Sleeper creator Damian Martin has said that his warm sci-fi video game series will end with Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, which will be released on January 31. However, Citizen Sleeper as a game series won’t necessarily end there.

The intention, as Martin explained to me in a recent interview, is to create a full tabletop role-playing version of the game and therefore transfer future adventures of the series into the TTRPG space that has inspired it so much.

Responding to whether that would be it for the Citizen Sleeper games after the sequel, Martin responded: “I think it’s for the video games. I’ll leave myself a back door somewhere that I can climb through and dig the grave again… But No. I think especially the ending, and I hope people feel this when they get to the end, I really felt like, okay, I’m the one who gets the last word. I really like where I left it.

“But Citizen Sleeper has meant a lot to a lot of people and that’s why I’m not going to leave that behind,” they added. “The next big project for me will be to work on a full Citizen Sleeper board game, but I need to find the right collaborator and I need to figure it out, and I need to do it alongside other things. So that’s something that will be a longer-term project” .

Martin has previously collaborated on tabletop projects. Their game In Other Waters was adapted for tabletop through a collaboration with Lone Archivist, and Citizen Sleeper was adapted into a solo tarot-based board game with the help of Alfred Valley, so there’s a strong precedent there.

The video game Martin will make next is actually the game he was pitching to his editor Fellow Traveler before development began on Citizen Sleeper 2. It was just the runaway success of Citizen Sleeper 1 (now with a million players and counting). ) which derailed those plans, turning Martin’s head toward additional content and, eventually, a sequel.

“In fact, I was already pitching my next game, which wasn’t Citizen Sleeper 2, to my publisher,” they said. “In fact, that will be the next game.”

Citizen Sleeper 2 arrives with great expectation on January 31. The demos have already given us a taste of a game that is quite different from Citizen Sleeper 1, with a much stronger sense of tension and more developed and distinct role-playing systems. The changes work brilliantly; This could be special.

However, the development cycle has not been easy. Personal challenges, as well as the pressure to live up to expectations, have made life difficult, as I discovered talking to Martin. Success, no matter how hard we seek it, can be difficult to face.

Look out for my full interview with Citizen Sleeper soon.
