Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, KC Current ownership group vying to bring WNBA team to Kansas City

As the WNBA explores further expansion, a franchise is coming to Kansas Town with the backing of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mahomes and the remnants of the KC Flow possession team were in talks with the WNBA to bring a franchise to the city.

In January 2023, Mahomes announced that he and his wife Brittany Mahomes had joined the NWSL’s KC Flow possession team. That means Mahomes is familiar with the growing reputation of women’s sports in the United States, and her megastar power could also help bring the WNBA to town.

If the possession team manages to bring a WNBA team to Kansas Town, it could become the fourth local professional team co-owned by Mahomes. In addition to Flow, he already has minority stakes in the Kansas Town Royals and Wear KC of the MLS.

The WNBA is currently in a round of competitive expansion, with the Blonde Order Valkyries joining the league in the future. The league also has introduced unused groups coming to Toronto and Portland within the 2026 season.

With the WNBA filming for 16 teams through 2028, that leaves room for another expansion franchise. Kansas Town will be in the mix, along with Philadelphia, Miami, Denver and Nashville.
