CD Projekt Red Writes Off Over $7 Million in Costs for Project Sirius

0

Polish game developer CD Projekt Red announced, it has written off more than $7 million in costs for Project Sirius, a spin-off title of the popular Witcher franchise. The company cited an evaluation of the project’s scope and commercial potential as the reason for the reset in development.

Development Costs

Before making a decision to deduct the costs, TechPowerUp claims CD Projekt Red spent more than $7 million on the project in 2022 and an additional $2.2 million in 2023. It’s unclear if Molasses Flood, which was acquired by CD Projekt Red in 2021, will continue to serve as the developer for Project Sirius.

Reason for Reset

The decision to reset development on Project Sirius was based on the company’s assessment of the project. “The aforementioned decision is based on results of evaluation of the scope and commercial potential of the original concept of Project Sirius, and ongoing work on formulating a new framework for this project,” CD Projekt Red stated in a statement.

Molasses Flood’s Involvement

Molasses Flood was announced as the developer for the RPG franchise in October 2022, along with other titles in the pipeline. However, it will seen if the company will continue to work on Project Sirius.

Recent Changes at CD Projekt Red

Last year, CD Projekt Red underwent changes as it merged with mobile subsidiary Spokko into its flagship Red studio. The company made this move as part of its efforts to its business operations and focus on providing players with best games.

CD Projekt Red’s decision to write off over $7 million in costs for Project Sirius highlights the challenges and risks involved in game development. Although it’s unfortunate that the project had to be restarted, the company deserves credit for its commitment to making high games and its willingness to make difficult choices.
