Palm Beach, Fla.-The co-owner of the Cleveland Browns, Jimmy Haslam, described the team of the Field Marshal Deshaun Watson as a “Great Swing-And-Fish”.
In March 2022, Cleveland acquired Watson from the Houston Texans in a commercial package that included three first round selections. The Browns then signed Watson with a $ 230 million contract that was fully guaranteed.
Since he joined the Browns, Watson has begun only 19 games due to suspension and injuries, registered one of the lowest total QBR in the NFL and suffered consecutive injuries in the season in 2023 and 2024.
“We took a great swing with Deshaun,” Haslam said Monday at the annual league meeting. “We thought we had the field marshal; we did not do it. And we renounced many draft teams to get it, so we have to get out of that hole.
“… [The trade] It was a complete organization decision and ends with Dee [Haslam] And I, so we take responsibility. “
Watson, a three times Pro Bowl selection with the Texans, broke the right Achilles tendon in October and underwent a second operation in January after renouncing his Achilles. The Browns said Watson is expected to lose a significant portion of the 2025 season.
His legal problems have helped derail his career in Cleveland. Watson served a suspension of 11 games in 2022 after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior during massage sessions. A couple of great jurors of Texas refused to present criminal charges against Watson, but fulfilled its suspension after the NFL and NFL players association reached an agreement on their discipline.
Cleveland still owes Watson $ 46 million in each of the next two seasons.
The Browns Campo Marshal Hall currently consists of Watson and Kenny Pickett, whom the team exchanged in mid -March. The Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Picktt will have the opportunity to compete to start in 2025.
Despite the admission that Watson’s trade was not successful, Haslam said the team is not linked to taking a quarterback with the second general selection in the NFL 2025 draft.
“It would be great if we could obtain ‘the field marshal’, but we are not going to force him,” said Haslam. “We are going to be patients and we will try to accumulate as many really good football players as we can.”
