Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country lead the charge as more Game Awards presentations are confirmed

With The game Awards 2024 just days away, developers are taking the opportunity to infuriate fans by revealing ahead of time that yes, their games will be appearing, with screenings of both Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4 now officially confirmed.

Mafia: The Old Country “the gritty mafia story set in the brutal underworld of 20th century Sicily” was announced earlier this year, and developer Hangar 13 has now taken to social media with a simple “We See you at The game Awards!” This fourth installment in the series is set to release next year, so the timing makes sense for a more substantial look beyond its initial trailer.

As for Borderlands 4, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has been talking enthusiastically since its reveal in August. And now he appeared to preview the shooter’s imminent appearance at the game Awards. “It’s happening, guys!” he wrote on social media. “I’ll be at The game Awards with a new Borderlands 4 trailer. I can’t wait!”

“Yes, there is game in the trailer!” Pitchford continued. “Also, in addition to lots of gameplay footage, I’ll be sharing an original, never-before-seen cinematic sequence depicting a moment that occurs roughly halfway between the end of Borderlands 3 and the beginning of Borderlands 4. I’M EXCITED!”

Elsewhere, Palworld developer Pocket Pair, currently embroiled in a patent infringement lawsuit with Nintendo, confirmed an appearance at the game Awards, promising fans, “You won’t want to miss it!” And it probably won’t surprise anyone to learn that Hideo Kojima will also be on this year’s show, his appearance alongside host and friend Geoff Keighley now almost as inevitable as the sunset. But what could it reveal? A Death Stranding 2 release date? More of your intriguing Xbox horror game OD? Only time, and perhaps a 45-minute segment of the show, will tell.

The game Awards 2024 airs this Friday, December 13 at 1am in the UK, but die-hard fans can tune in half an hour early if they fancy a bit of a pre-show. The 2023 event went on well into the early hours of the morning, so if you value your sleep like a sensible person, you can always catch up at a more reasonable time via Eurogamer’s coverage.
