Hobart Hurricanes 165 for 4 (David 68*) beat Sydney Thunder 164 for 6 (Warner 88*) for six wickets

Tim David fired for the second time in as many games to lead Hobart Hurricanes to a convincing victory over Sydney Thunder and top spot in the BBL table.

The Hurricanes smashed Thunder’s 164 for 6 at Ninja Stadium on Friday night with 19 balls to spare, and David finished unbeaten on 68 off 38 balls.

David, elevated to No. 5 after Ben McDermott suffered hamstring pain while fielding, came alive in the two-over power surge, hitting 26 off six balls. David iced the victory with a six off Wes Agar, his sixth six of the match.

The 28-year-old played an almost identical hand in the Hurricanes’ victory over Adelaide Strikers in their previous match with an unbeaten 62 off 28 deliveries.

The Hurricanes have won five games in a row to establish themselves as real contenders for the title with three games left before the final. They have missed the finals in the last two seasons and are one of two teams yet to lift the BBL silver medal.

They overcame an on-field injury scare when captain Nathan Ellis crashed head-first into an advertising billboard in the 15th minute while diving trying to stop a boundary. He was assessed by the medical staff and surprisingly returned to the field soon after and continued bowling.

Thunder fall from first to third in the standings with four wins in eight games. Earlier, David Warner top-scored for them with an unbeaten 88 off 66 balls in an innings that took time to get going.

Thunder did not reach a boundary until the fifth over and were grafted to 85 for 3 after 13. But they picked up the pace towards the back, with Sam Billings contributing 28 off 15 balls.

Warner, who broke his bat early on, looked more comfortable the further he went and took the long handle from Ellis in a final that went 17 runs.

Youngster Sam Konstas failed to fire for Thunder after two dizzying Tests against India and was out for 4 off nine balls, gloving a short ball from Riley Meredith.

Openers Mitchell Owen and Matthew Wade got the Hurricanes off to a good start in the chase and the latter hit George Garton off the ground.

The Hurricanes lost three wickets to keep Thunder in the hunt before David and Chris Jordan took them home.
