Arcane Netflix banner image pulled after fans spot telltale signs of AI

Riot Games removed a promotional poster after fans pointed out that it appeared to have been created with artificial intelligence.

After thanking an eagle-eyed viewer for pointing out the strangeness of a hand in the banner art on Netflix, Riot Games called the image “a mistake.” [that] has since been removed” and stated his “strict stance” against AI.

“We appreciate you bringing this to our attention,” wrote Riot Games and Arcane Brand Lead Alex Shahmiri.

“We have a strict stance on not using AI for anything related to Arcane because it’s disrespectful to the amazing artists who worked on the show,” he added. “This image was a mistake and has since been removed. [Thank you] again for reporting him.”

ICYMI, the independent gaming platform Itch.io, now requires developers to disclose whether generative AI has been used in their work. The platform recently detailed its new labeling requirement, specifying that it is a required field for asset creator pages “to ensure buyers know the origins of the material they are obtaining.”
