Ange Postecoglou on ‘thin ice’ at Tottenham after ‘unacceptable’ defeat

After Tottenham lost to Arsenal in the first derby of the season in north London in September, Postecoglou defiantly declared that he “always wins a trophy” in his second season.

They were comments intended to allay fans’ fears of a trophyless season, but instead they were accustomed, as Postecoglou himself said, to mocking him after a bad result.

The silverware remains in play with Tottenham in the Europa League and a 1-0 first-leg lead over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

But Postecoglou knows that results must improve soon.

And he added: “Of course the defeats hurt me. It’s not acceptable. Too many defeats this year. Too many games we miss.”

“This has to stop.”

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown feels the pressure on Postecoglou is increasing and says their style of play is sometimes proving costly as they continue to play a high-pressure game.

“Tottenham took a lot of risks and Arsenal took advantage, the game was very open,” Keown said on TNT Sports.

“Manchester United will probably beat Spurs. It’s a difficult time for them and the manager is skating on thin ice.”

Former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon added: “One win in nine is not good at all.

“This generates a lot of concern in that [Tottenham] camp. “If they weren’t in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup there would be big problems.”

Son said players must also stand up and be counted.

“It also depends on the players,” said the forward. We have to listen to what we want to do. I think we were not disciplined enough.

“We have to do better in all aspects. When you look at the table, it is not good enough.”

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand criticized Tottenham’s defending and said: “It’s like watching an under-18 academy game when the kids figure it out for themselves.

“I’d be yelling at my goalkeeper, at my defenders. Play over the press, not against it.”
