Alien: Romulus director hopes to “discover things you’ve never seen before” with a sequel, but if there are more aliens, I have bad news for him.

A sequel to Alien: Romulus was confirmed a while ago, and it seems director Fede Alvarex is hoping to do something different with it.

When Alien: Romulus hit theaters last year, it did so to a somewhat mixed reaction. Audiences generally responded well, but critics were less impressed, although there were many fans of the series who were also unconvinced. Criticisms included things like it relying too much on previous entries in the series and that horrible Ian Holms CGI (which has been touched up a bit for the home release). However, none of that matters much when the box office numbers are good, and Alien: Romulus did very well there, securing a sequel. Now, in an interview with Empire, director Fede Álvarez has teased his ideas for a sequel, saying he wants to go “a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before.”

The director explained: “Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I’m working on it right now. We’re excited to see where it can go. We’ve pretty much checked all the boxes for things I want to see. [in Romulus]and I recovered many of the things I had not seen in a long time. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.” He teased that the story would continue to follow Cailee Spaeny’s character, Rain. “I think it will be very exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise in we’ve never been before and discover things you’ve never seen before.

However, that doesn’t mean Alvarez isn’t cautious, noting that the sequel story is done just for the sake of it. “The common mistake with sequels is to do them because you can, and thanks to the success of Romulus, we can definitely do a sequel,” he said. “But I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea, something worthy of that title.”

Whether it ends up being a worthy sequel, we probably won’t know for a while, but let’s hope they don’t bring in another dead actor for the sake of nostalgia points. Also, you can’t just throw another weird alien in there, that’s been done like every Alien movie since the first one.
