The ailing New York Jets are in the midst of an organizational overhaul, already searching for a new head coach and general manager, and heading toward a early breakup with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, Rodgers, 40, insisted Tuesday that he is undecided about playing in 2025, although he added that he still prefers to remain with the Jets, contradicting a report that he is ready for his own new start.
“As far as my future is concerned, I haven’t told anyone in my life that I want to play in 2025. [but not for] Jets,” Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “That’s 100% false. …I’m going to wait and see what happens at the end of the season, if they want me back. …I really enjoyed my stay in New York. …I have made great friendships with the team and have enjoyed living in Jersey. So I’m not abandoning ship.
“I don’t even know if I want to play yet, but New York would be my first choice,” Rodgers continued. “When you’re 40 years old, you’re going to be 41, you’re obviously at the end of your career… If it’s New York, they have to want me to be here. And then the new general manager, the new staff, They’re all going to have to want me to be here. be with the Jets and then, on a physical level, I have to see how I feel… I think, at this point, I am open to everything and not attached to anything… A lot of things can change… but playing in. New York obviously would. “It would be my first choice if I wanted to play.”
Rodgers’ comments come days after The Athletic reported that the former Green Bay Packers star has little interest in remaining with the Jets after two seasons with the club. Rodgers also specifically denied Tuesday that he ever spoke to Dianna Russini, who cited anonymous sources for the report.
His most recent stance on playing in 2025 differs slightly from the last public response he gave regarding his future. When asked if he intended to return for another season following the Jets’ loss in Week 11 to fall to 3-7, Rodgers responded more optimistic: “I think so, yes,” he said.
Jets owner Woody Johnson is reportedly already considering parting ways with Rodgers after the season, two years after acquiring the former MVP in a trade. His team still has seven games left to play in 2024.
