Why Liverpool contract negotiations for Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold are crucial

Real Madrid had been associated with the Englishman Alexander-Arnold, who recently spoke about how remarkable winning a Ballon d’Or can be.

Salah has been linked with a move to a Saudi Arabian club since he began his spree of state-funded transfers in the last event.

The Reds rejected a £150m bid for him in the summer of 2023, a voluminous decision to make two years before the end of their bid.

This is a fairly atypical place with doubts about three guaranteed starters, especially for a club as bulky as Liverpool.

However, Slot didn’t seem too involved with the status at Friday’s pregame briefing convention.

“For me, the contractual situation could become a problem if the players don’t perform as well as they do at the moment,” Slot said.

“Right now all three are in a good place, they are all performing very, very, very well.

“There are discussions going on, as Virgil said, with the people he needs to talk to, and that’s not me. I talk to him about other things.

“Let’s wait and see though everything you mentioned is totally accurate in the sense that you don’t know exactly what the time can be as long as you don’t point out the word but.”

Liverpool fans BBC Sport spoke to before the match did not seem too worried, with many confident that all three would stay, although there were fears that Salah could leave for Saudi Arabia.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Friday Football Social programme, believes Van Dijk, 33, and Salah, 32, are more likely to stay than academy product Alexander-Arnold, 26 years old.

“I’m sure the two used boys will sign. They are almost certainly at a level in their careers where it is difficult to move to a better club than Liverpool,” he said.

“I think Salah may be determined to decipher as much data as he can at Liverpool.

“I think the argument will be when you’re ready for that last contract and it’s not really about money but the length of contracts as you get older.

“Trent is in a different situation and is probably the only public that worries him the most at Real Madrid. Dani Carvajal has just overcome his anterior cruciate ligament, so they are surely desperate for a right-back for the next 18 months.”
