Sydney Thunder 173 for 3 (Voll 97*) beat Perth Scorchers 170 for 5 (Mooney 97, Devine 44, Peschel 3-28) by seven wickets
Voll hit 13 fours and sixes in the best innings of his career, surpassing the 92 he hit against Adelaide Strikers earlier this month.
“It’s pretty high,” Voll said of her player-of-the-match performance. “To be chasing such a big total and to have the backing of the coaches to just go out there and play my way and have it come out like that is pretty special.”
Voll’s 64-run partnership with Heather Knight was crucial for Thunder. The 21-year-old revealed she was inspired by the record-breaking batting exploits of Hobart Hurricanes opener Lizelle Lee this month.
“I actually watched Lizelle Lee hit the other day and realized I’d been trying to push myself a little too early,” Voll said. “I kind of took a little more time and took the strike away from Atha. [Chamari Athapaththu] at first there too. “It was kind of lucky to get ahead.”
Mooney looked like she was going to be the game-winner with the bat when she made the most of Thunder’s missed catches. She was euthanized three times before her 20th birthday and again shortly after turning another half-century.
Thunder also gave early life to Sophie Devine and the experienced pair formed a 112-run partnership for Scorchers’ third wicket. Devine fell to Taneale Peschel and Mooney was out lbw to Shabnim Ismail in the final over, falling well short of what would have been his fourth WBBL century.
Amy Edgar removed Knight and Scorchers looked headed for victory when Thunder’s required run rate rose above 10. But Voll took charge with the support of Anika Learoyd to guide Thunder home.
