Referee Juan Martínez Munuera’s miss on Akturkoglu’s penalty provided drama at the end of Saturday’s goalless draw.
Although Turkey controlled most of the match in front of their hostile home crowd, Wales provided a threat of their own with a goal disallowed to Jordan James and a goal from Harry Wilson hitting the post.
It was a creditable performance in difficult circumstances, maintaining Bellamy’s unbeaten start as Wales manager after five matches.
The former captain said beforehand that Wales would “know a lot more” about themselves and their 2026 World Cup qualification credentials after this match in Turkey, and events in Kayseri confirmed that view.
“[I learned] a lot [about the team]”said Bellamy. “Defending the area, we are exceptional, so that is a credit to the previous managers. We are very strong putting bodies on the line.
“I knew I would feel a little sore today, it was a tough game against a really good opponent. Can we improve with the ball? Can our angles and our timing be right? That’s what we need to improve on.”
Bellamy added that he also learned some valuable lessons about himself as a manager.
“I was trying to stay calm and it was hard, especially at the end. You don’t want to be on that roller coaster.” [of emotion]”, said.
“I felt like maybe once or twice I was and I don’t like it, so I need to learn from that, get better. I was telling the players that I need to get better too. The proof of the environment that Turkey was able to create, I hope it benefits me to me and the players too.”
