The remake of Resident Evil 4 is ‘by far’ the best-selling of the series, as it achieves a new milestone

Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake has sold more than 9 million copies since its release in March 2023, the company announced.

That means that in less than two years, the remake has entered Capcom’s top ten best-selling games and has potentially already surpassed the remake of Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil 5 in sales.

As business development manager and Resident Evil expert Alex Aniel noted, this also makes the Resident Evil 4 remake “by far” the fastest-selling installment of the series to date.

To reach 9 million sales, RE4 would have sold at least 1 million copies in its eighth quarter on sale (October to December 2024). The previous best results in the same window were Resident Evil Village (500k) and Resident Evil 7 (400k).

Capcom has so far released three commercially successful Resident Evil remakes. The Resident Evil 2 remake was released in January 2019 and, as of September, had sold 14.5 million copies, more than any other entry in the series. Its Resident Evil 3 remake followed in April 2020 and sold 9.2 million units.

The publisher has confirmed that it plans to release more Resident Evil remakes, which VGC says will continue to be based on the first classic titles in the franchise.

Speaking in December 2023, Resident Evil 4 remake director Yasuhiro Anpo was asked if Capcom wants to add more remakes to these.

“Yes,” he replied. “We have released three remakes so far and they have all been very well received. Since it allows a modern audience to play these games, it’s something I’m happy to do as someone who loves these older games and wants to continue making more.

“The game we will remake in the future is something we would like to announce in the future, so please look forward to it.”
