Florham Park, NJ-the former general manager of the Minnesota Vikings, Rick Spielman, who helped New York’s jets in their searches for a GM and chief coach, has accepted a full-time post with the organization.
Spielman will be the Senior Football Advisor, he announced Thursday in his CBS Sports Podcast “with the first choice.”
“Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey are the end -of -decisions endings,” Spielman said about the new coach and GM, respectively. “I am there as your resonance table.”
Spielman was part of the 33rd team, a media and technology company hired by Jets to compile and examine candidates. The former general manager of the Jets, Mike Tannenbaum, who founded the 33rd team, joined Spielman during the process. Both Tannenbaum and Spielman participated in the interviews; The Jets interviewed 31 candidates for both positions.
Spielman, 62, replaces Phil Savage, who will remain as a consultant. Savage ended the season as the interim general manager after Joe Douglas was fired in November.
“At this time, my biggest project is trying to rebuild the side of the soccer operation of things,” Spielman said. “There are many changes that happen there. I feel honored and privileged that they called me to be part of him in the future.”
Spielman can be a resource for Mougey, which has no experience in GM. Previously, Mougey was the GM assistant of the Denver’s Broncos and worked together with the general manager George Paton, who turns out to be a protected from Spielman. Paton was Spielman’s man for several years in Minnesota, where Spielman served as general manager from 2012 to 2021.
The jets are in the middle of a shaking of the main office. On Thursday, Mougey has separated from two executives for a long time, co -director of the Greg Nejmeh players and the senior director of Dave Socie soccer strategy. Mougey replaced Nejmeh with former Broncos Explorer Rob Paton, George’s nephew.
Spielman said that it will eventually be involved in free agency and draft, but emphasized that it will have a secondary role.
“I don’t need to make decisions; I don’t want to make decisions anymore,” he said. “I really do not. I had my day in the sun, the good and the bad. What I enjoy most is to share experiences.”
Spielman said he will inform the Jets facilities next week, but that he will work remotely.
