Kraven the Hunter, whether he ends up being good or not, can at least promise violence, action and… a story about family?
I don’t have much confidence that Kraven the Hunter will be a good movie. Literally every live-action Sony Spider-Verse movie without Spider-Man has been terrible, except for the Venom trilogy (those fit into the “so bad but good” category), and I see no reason why Kraven would be any different. It’s not that Sony and crew haven’t tried to convince you to watch it and say it’s good, its director even openly asked potential viewers to give it a chance, and the first eight minutes were released for free online in a likely gamble. to increase ticket sales. And now, in a recent interview with GamesRadar, lead actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson attempted to present the film as something a little more rounded, with some heart beneath the violence.
“I think at the center of the story is a real family drama. You see these two kids raised in a very toxic environment,” Taylor-Johnson said. “His father is a Russian gangster, the head of this mafia gang, and he eventually wants to give up the business.” However, Taylor-Johnson’s character Sergei, also known as Kraven, doesn’t like the idea of taking over his father’s profession, which, the actor explains, “kind of sends my character into this journey of becoming a vigilante, and his path to becoming a vigilante.” a villain.”
There is also Dmitri, Sergei’s brother, who is “the only thing that [Sergei/Kraven] He cares and wants to protect with all his life, but I think he ends up trapped in everything [that] It could put you in danger and you have to live with that. And so, there’s a really strong heart and soul to this story.”
Director JC Chandor also participated in the same interview, noting that the film’s R rating allowed them to “do some things.” The director explains, “There’s a history of mental illness. You’ll see a couple of things that happen here that you’re like, ‘whoa,’ which actually refers more to the way these kids were raised.”
I’ll grant you that the idea of a movie that actually deals with adults dealing with their upbringing in such a tumultuous environment is more interesting than just “a boy likes to hunt, so that’s what he does,” but we’ll have to wait. and see how everything runs first.
Kraven the Hunter will be out in a few days, on December 13th.
