Superstar Citizen spin-off Squadron 42 launching in 2026 – here’s an hour-long gameplay preview

Cloud Imperium has released a longer gameplay reveal of its upcoming Superstar Citizen spin-off, Squadron 42, which is set to release in 2026.

During CitizenCon 2954 this weekend, thousands of fans descended on Manchester, UK, to find out what will happen in the medium to long-term future of CI space simulator, Superstar Citizen. And as part of that showcase, fans were treated to a star-studded 42 Squadron game trailer.

Below is a one-hour sample of what to expect:

“Last year we announced that 42 Squadron was fully operational, so what has the team been up to since then?” said CEO Chris Roberts.

“Given the scale and ambition of Squadron, our teams have focused on polishing and optimizing to ensure the game meets all of the high standards that I have, the team has, and you the boys have.”

Roberts also noted that the story will take “anywhere” between 30 and 40 hours to finish and showed that he was “confident” it could be free sometime in 2026.

Squadron 42 features an all-star cast including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Henry Cavill, Liam Cunningham, Andy Serkis, Mark Sturdy, Ben Mendelson and Sophie Wu, among others.

The single-player, story-driven Squad 42 was introduced way back in 2014, but has been delayed on more than one occasion.

In case you know why Superstar Citizen has raised a staggering $700 million in crowdfunding, join now to get the CitizenCon 2954 “exclusive starter pack,” available now through October 31.

Prior to this date, Superstar Citizen Cloud Developer Imperium Games (CIG) was ordered to pay more than £27k to a disabled former employee who filed a discrimination claim against the company.
