Subregional Africa QLF 2024/25, GAMBI vs ZIM twelfth Fit Fit document, October 23, 2024
Zimbabwe broke the record for the best overall in T20 cricket on Wednesday after scoring a total of 344 for 4 against Gambia in the Africa International T20 Cup men’s sub-regional qualification tournament. Sikandar Raza led the way with a century, Zimbabwe’s first ever, off just 33 balls. In the end he finished unbeaten on 133, with 15 sixes. His teammates face 12 more to achieve that record as well. So far, Nepal has had the best overall (314) and probably faced the most sixes in an innings (26). Gambia in the comeback were bowled out for 54 as Zimbabwe also recorded the biggest win (in terms of runs) in T20.

Ruaraka Sports Club Grassland in Nairobi witnessed history on Wednesday with Zimbabwe looking impressive in intent from the first ball they faced. They made fifty in 3.2 overs. Tadiwanashe Marumani made his fastest breakthrough, in just 13 balls. The hundred team got up before the power play took place and from there it was a drill of ways they could send the ball into the stands. There were 57 boundaries in the total innings, which may be a T20 record, with four Zimbabwe batsmen contributing fifty-plus scores, some other record. Brian Bennett made 50 for 26 and Clive Mandande made 53 for 17 batting the entire ball of the innings for 6.

Raza, however, was the star of the show. He came into bat at the end of the seventh over, after fielding restrictions were relaxed, but generated a surfeit of disagreement. He hit the third ball he faced for 6 and embarked on a scoring spree that made him the owner of the second-fastest century in T20I cricket. His 33-ball goal equaled that of Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, for Namibia against Nepal in February 2024.

Gambia, which is the smallest country on continental Africa, located to the west, could do very little to stem the tide. Musa Jorbateh conceded the most runs by a bowler in a T20, his four overs going for 93. He used to be one of only five bowlers to get out for more than 50 runs or more from his witchcraft. The team is still looking for its first win in the African sub-regional qualifier so far, having beaten fellow strugglers Rwanda and Seychelles in the first two matches, future Zimbabwe having already won three out of three.
